The New Subaru STARLINK In-Vehicle Tech Guide

Subaru STARLINK Safety and Security services are designed to help keep you and your Subaru safe. The system gives you access to convenient emergency-assistance features, such as automatic collision notification, 24-hour roadside assistance, stolen vehicle recovery, and vehicle alerts. You can access these services from your vehicle, computer, or mobile device: 

  • Automatic collision notification: If you're in an accident, STARLINK alerts a customer care advisor who can communicate with you via your car's speakers and alert the appropriate emergency services.
  • Enhanced roadside assistance: When you press the blue “I” button on your car's overhead console, a STARLINK customer care advisor sends help to your GPS location.
  • SOS emergency assistance: Pressing the red “SOS” button on the overhead console connects you to a STARLINK customer care advisor.
  • Stolen vehicle recovery: If your car is stolen, a STARLINK advisor will work with the police to help find your car using its GPS location.
  • Stolen vehicle immobilizer: After the stolen vehicle recovery has been initiated, this STARLINK feature prevents anyone from starting your Subaru.
  • Vehicle security alarm notification: STARLINK will notify you if your Subaru alarm system is activated.

With the help of these features, you can rest easy knowing that you and your Subaru are in safe hands.

Vehicle Alerts

With STARLINK, you can also receive various vehicle alerts and notifications to make your Subaru ownership experience easier.

When someone else is driving your car, such as a young family member, you can manage their usage with the MySubaru app or your MySubaru.com account. You can set up speed limits, geographical boundaries, and curfews. If any of these limits are exceeded, you'll receive an alert.

STARLINK can send you a monthly email with a link to your vehicle health report. You can see a full diagnostic report on your Subaru. With MySubaru.com and the MySubaru mobile app, you can see a vehicle condition check with items such as the odometer reading, tire pressure, driving range, and more.

If the check engine or other warning light appears, STARLINK can send you diagnostic alerts via the MySubaru app, email, or text telling you what the problem is and if you need to schedule a service appointment. When your car needs servicing, you'll receive maintenance notifications by email. 

Vehicle alerts help you stay on top of your Subaru maintenance and deal with problems early, potentially saving you money on future repairs.

Connectivity: Expanding the Horizons With STARLINK

With the standard Bluetooth hands-free technology in Subaru vehicles, you can link your Android or Apple mobile device automatically through your Subaru's infotainment system. When you're connected, you can make and receive calls and play your favorite music without taking your hands off the wheel. Follow these easy steps to set up a Bluetooth connection:

  • First, activate Bluetooth on your smartphone.
  • Next, on your car's infotainment touch screen, select Phone — Bluetooth — Add. The STARLINK system name and PIN will appear on the screen.
  • Then, on your smartphone, go to the Bluetooth menu and select the Subaru STARLINK system to begin pairing your devices.
  • Now, your smartphone and Subaru STARLINK are connected via Bluetooth.

You can also link your Apple or Android device to the STARLINK system via the Android Auto or Apple CarPlay apps. Download the latest version of the appropriate app from Google Play or the Apple App Store. Connect your phone to the USB port, or wirelessly where available. You'll see a prompt on the infotainment screen asking if you want to enable Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Press Yes to enable the connection, then follow the prompts on your mobile device to finish the setup.

Once your phone is connected, you can safely and easily access your favorite apps, navigation, podcasts, music, news, and more through STARLINK.

Wi-Fi Connectivity: How To Set It Up

Most new Subaru vehicles feature a built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot with connectivity for up to eight devices. You and your passengers can all enjoy checking emails, playing games, and streaming music, movies, TV shows, and more from the comfort of your Subaru. Whether you're driving around the Skokie or Greater Chicago streets or heading out on a road trip, you can always stay connected.

Once you've signed up for Subaru Wi-Fi hot spot services, setting up your Wi-Fi connection is easy. Just follow these steps:

  • Go to the STARLINK settings menu, making sure you're in the general tab.
  • Scroll down to and turn on Wi-Fi hot spot.
  • Connect your mobile device to the network displayed in the Wi-Fi hot spot settings, and input the case-sensitive password.

Now you're all set and ready to stream your favorite content and stay connected to your world.

Remote Access via the MySubaru App

When you download the MySubaru app, you can remotely access certain features of your Subaru. From the palm of your hand, you can lock and unlock the doors, start the car, and set the climate control to the perfect temperature for a comfortable beginning to your journey. 

The vehicle locator helps you find your Subaru in a crowded parking lot. Via the app, you can also track your car's service history, find Subaru service centers, schedule a service, and get real-time vehicle health notifications.

Eddie my service guy was exceptional. He originally got a “no” from the warranty company about my coverage, but called them back and talked to a supervisor. He persisted and got my repair covered, as it should be. It said it right there on the contract. He also worked with me on the best price for tires. Eddie was great! My only snafu was in picking up my car (the next morning because there was no courtesy driver available). I paid, then waited 10-15 minutes for my car to be driven up, which it never was. I finally walked around and found it, right outside the garage and tracked down someone to just give me my keys. Clearly, there was a mess up in communicating to someone to get me my car, even though both the cashier and a guy whose attention I was able to get said it should be coming soon.

They care about keeping our Subaru in the best running condition. Thank you for caring!

I bought this 2010 Forrester for my sister 12 years ago. We have taken our car to Evanston Subaru for all our service needs and have always been treated well. I recommend this dealership. It is staffed with good people and competent mechanics. The facility is always clean. This is noticeable. They even wash my car without being asked.. When the service personnel recommend areas needing attention, I trust them for caring for our safety. They care about keeping our Subaru in the best running condition. Thank you for caring!

Great. I called first so it would be OK to get my 2018 Subaru Forester towed in because the engine oil light came on, with a message on my dashboard. George told me since I didn't have an appointment it would be worked on the next day. (The towing service was great). They found a quart of oil missing, and some other things to fix. George worked with my budget for an oil change and back brake replacement. Extremely kind. Then they always fill the tires with air, and give a free carwash before I go. The technicians worked really hard in 104 degree weather. I waited in the waiting area: free coffee, water and a granola bar. Thank you!

Every experience I've had at this location has been great and I'm sure everyone who works here is wonderful.

Every experience I've had at this location has been great and I'm sure everyone who works here is wonderful. That said, Eric is a cut above — he's just incredible. We recently had to get a good amount of work done on our 2015 Forester which had not been taken in for some time. Eric walked me through several different options for repairs and servicing, all with different price breakdowns, and made sure I understood what each service/repair was and why he recommended it. He also worked with his service manager to get me a great deal by not charging to replace our AC condenser which had stopped working. I had stopped going to this location because we moved and it wasn't as convenient, but after this most recent experience with Eric I will only take my Forester here. Wish I could give more than 5 stars!
