What's the Difference Between Used & Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) When Buying a Subaru?

When purchasing a Subaru, you have several options, including buying new, used, or Certified Pre-Owned (CPO). While new cars come with the latest features and zero mileage, they also come at a premium price. On the other hand, used and Certified Pre-Owned vehicles offer a cost-effective alternative with unique advantages and considerations. In this article, we’ll delve into the key differences between used and Certified Pre-Owned Subaru vehicles to help you make an informed decision.

Definition and Certification Process

Used Vehicles: A used vehicle is any car that has been previously owned and driven. Used cars come in all makes, models, ages, and conditions. When you buy a used Subaru, you may purchase it from a private seller, an independent used car dealership, or even a Subaru dealership. The condition, mileage, and maintenance history can vary widely, so it's essential to thoroughly inspect and research the vehicle before making a purchase.

Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Vehicles: On the other hand, Certified Pre-Owned vehicles undergo a rigorous certification process. For a Subaru to qualify as CPO, it must meet specific criteria set by Subaru of America. Typically, these vehicles are no more than five years old and have fewer than 80,000 miles on the odometer. The certification process includes a comprehensive 152-point inspection conducted by factory-trained technicians. Any necessary repairs or replacements are made using genuine Subaru parts, ensuring that the vehicle meets the highest standards of quality and reliability.

Warranty and Coverage

Used Vehicles: The warranty coverage, if any, can vary significantly when purchasing a used vehicle. Used cars are often sold "as-is," meaning they come without any warranty or guarantees. Depending on their age and mileage, some used vehicles may still have a portion of the original manufacturer's warranty remaining. Additionally, some dealerships offer limited warranties or extended service plans for an extra cost.

Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Vehicles: One of the primary benefits of purchasing a CPO Subaru is the extensive warranty coverage that comes with it. Subaru CPO vehicles come with a factory-backed 7-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty, starting from the vehicle's original in-service date. This warranty covers critical components such as the engine, transmission, and drivetrain. Additionally, CPO Subarus often include a 12-month/12,000-mile Comprehensive Warranty that covers most other elements, providing added peace of mind.

Vehicle History and Condition

Used Vehicles: The history and condition of a used vehicle can vary widely, and it’s crucial to obtain a vehicle history report before making a purchase. Services like CARFAX or AutoCheck can provide information on the vehicle’s past, including accidents, title issues, and maintenance records. However, not all used cars have a detailed history, and some issues may not be documented.

Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Vehicles: CPO Subarus comes with a thorough vehicle history report, ensuring the car has a clean title and no major accidents or damage. The certification process also includes a detailed inspection and reconditioning process so you can be confident that the vehicle is in excellent condition. CPO vehicles must meet stringent criteria, which means they typically have lower mileage and have been well-maintained.

Cost and Value

Used Vehicles: One of the main advantages of purchasing a used vehicle is the lower upfront cost compared to new or CPO cars. Used cars can be found at various prices, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. However, the trade-off is that used vehicles may come with higher maintenance and repair costs, especially if they lack warranty coverage.

Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Vehicles: CPO vehicles are more expensive than used cars due to the certification process, reconditioning, and added warranty coverage. However, the higher price can be justified by the peace of mind that comes with knowing the vehicle has been thoroughly inspected and backed by a comprehensive warranty. Additionally, CPO Subarus often hold their value better than non-certified used cars, making them a sound investment in the long run.

Financing and Incentives

Used Vehicles: Financing options are typically available through banks, credit unions, and some dealerships. However, interest rates for used car loans may be higher than those for new or CPO vehicles due to the increased risk associated with older cars. Special incentives or promotional financing rates are less common for used cars.

Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Vehicles: Subaru often offers special financing rates and incentives for CPO vehicles, making them more affordable for buyers. These promotional rates can be competitive with those offered for new cars, helping reduce ownership costs. Additionally, Subaru may provide other incentives, such as complimentary maintenance plans or roadside assistance, further enhancing the value of a CPO purchase.

Peace of Mind and Reliability

Used Vehicles: While many reliable used cars are on the market, there’s always an inherent risk when buying a vehicle with an unknown history. Unexpected repairs and maintenance issues can arise, leading to additional costs and inconvenience. It’s essential to have a trusted mechanic inspect the vehicle before purchase and to consider purchasing an extended warranty for added protection.

Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Vehicles: CPO Subarus offers a higher level of reliability and peace of mind due to the rigorous certification process and comprehensive warranty coverage. The thorough inspection and reconditioning process ensures that the vehicle is in excellent condition, and any necessary repairs are made using genuine Subaru parts. The added warranty coverage provides further assurance that you’re making a smart investment.

In conclusion, while both used and Certified Pre-Owned Subaru vehicles offer cost savings compared to new cars, CPO vehicles provide additional benefits such as extensive warranty coverage, thorough inspections, and unique financing options. Ultimately, choosing between used and CPO will depend on your budget, priorities, and peace of mind. By understanding the key differences, you can make an informed decision that best suits your needs.

Eddie my service guy was exceptional. He originally got a “no” from the warranty company about my coverage, but called them back and talked to a supervisor. He persisted and got my repair covered, as it should be. It said it right there on the contract. He also worked with me on the best price for tires. Eddie was great! My only snafu was in picking up my car (the next morning because there was no courtesy driver available). I paid, then waited 10-15 minutes for my car to be driven up, which it never was. I finally walked around and found it, right outside the garage and tracked down someone to just give me my keys. Clearly, there was a mess up in communicating to someone to get me my car, even though both the cashier and a guy whose attention I was able to get said it should be coming soon.

I bought this 2010 Forrester for my sister 12 years ago. We have taken our car to Evanston Subaru for all our service needs and have always been treated well. I recommend this dealership. It is staffed with good people and competent mechanics. The facility is always clean. This is noticeable. They even wash my car without being asked.. When the service personnel recommend areas needing attention, I trust them for caring for our safety. They care about keeping our Subaru in the best running condition. Thank you for caring!

Great. I called first so it would be OK to get my 2018 Subaru Forester towed in because the engine oil light came on, with a message on my dashboard. George told me since I didn't have an appointment it would be worked on the next day. (The towing service was great). They found a quart of oil missing, and some other things to fix. George worked with my budget for an oil change and back brake replacement. Extremely kind. Then they always fill the tires with air, and give a free carwash before I go. The technicians worked really hard in 104 degree weather. I waited in the waiting area: free coffee, water and a granola bar. Thank you!

Every experience I've had at this location has been great and I'm sure everyone who works here is wonderful. That said, Eric is a cut above — he's just incredible. We recently had to get a good amount of work done on our 2015 Forester which had not been taken in for some time. Eric walked me through several different options for repairs and servicing, all with different price breakdowns, and made sure I understood what each service/repair was and why he recommended it. He also worked with his service manager to get me a great deal by not charging to replace our AC condenser which had stopped working. I had stopped going to this location because we moved and it wasn't as convenient, but after this most recent experience with Eric I will only take my Forester here. Wish I could give more than 5 stars!
